How scams that copy banks and building societies work
UK Finance describes the usual pattern: a caller says they are from your bank or the police, tells you there has been fraud on your account, and asks you to move your money to a "safe account". The criminal controls that account.
Stop Scams UK runs 159, which puts you through to your bank and cannot be spoofed. Hang up and call 159 or the number on the back of your card.
This could still be a scam call
Criminals can make their number look like a genuine one (this is called spoofing). If someone calls from this number and asks for money, bank details, a code or passwords, hang up. Then call Santander UK back on the number on the back of your card, or call 159, which connects you to your bank.
Safe ways to check
- Call 159 (opens in a new tab): Stop Scams UK runs 159, which connects you to your bank. It cannot be spoofed.
- Santander UK's own contact page (opens in a new tab): Where this number is published.
- Report Fraud (opens in a new tab): Report fraud and cyber crime in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In Scotland, call Police Scotland on 101.
- Forward scam texts to 7726 (opens in a new tab): It is free, and reports the message to your mobile provider.
- How number spoofing works: Why a genuine number on your screen does not prove who is calling.
