Stop unwanted calls

Report and block a number

Edited by Richard BarkerChecked 13 October 2026

Send the number to 7726 for free, then block it on your phone. If the call was about your bank, hang up and call 159. If you lost money or shared details, report it to Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040, or to Police Scotland on 101.

Report it, then block it

Reporting helps networks and the police find the people behind scam calls. Blocking stops this one number, though scammers often switch numbers.

Questions

Is it free to report a text or call to 7726?

Yes. The National Cyber Security Centre says reporting a suspicious text to 7726 is free. Ofcom says you can also copy a scam caller’s number from your recent calls and send it to 7726 in a text.

What happened to Action Fraud?

Report Fraud, run by the City of London Police, replaced Action Fraud on 4 December 2025. The phone number, 0300 123 2040, stayed the same. In Scotland, report fraud to Police Scotland on 101.

Will joining the TPS stop scam calls?

No. Ofcom says the Telephone Preference Service tells genuine companies you do not want sales calls, but it will not block scam calls. It also does not stop calls from companies you have agreed to hear from.

Who do I tell about silent calls?

Ofcom handles complaints about silent and abandoned calls. It cannot look into single cases, but complaints can lead to investigations.

I clicked a link in a scam text. What should I do?

Ofcom says to contact your mobile provider if you clicked a link or installed something, and to avoid using banking apps on that phone until you know it is safe. If you entered bank details, call your bank or 159 straight away.

Who can help in Scotland?

Report fraud to Police Scotland on 101, or 999 in an emergency. Ofcom also points people in Scotland to Advice Direct Scotland on 0808 164 6000.
