If a caller says they are the police

To check a call from the police, call 101 on a different phone line.

Banks and the police will never call you to verify your PIN, and will not ask you to withdraw money or buy or send items for an investigation. If you get a call like this, hang up.

Scammers use phone spoofing, which falsifies caller ID so that a call can appear to come from a trusted government department when it does not.

Read our guide to police impersonation calls.

Neighbourhood team numbers

In the police.uk data, only four forces (Greater Manchester Police, Gwent Police, South Yorkshire Police, Sussex Police) give a phone number for their neighbourhood teams. Every other force lists only 101 there. These are neighbourhood team numbers, not emergency lines.
