How scams that copy regulators, ombudsmen and scam services work
Ofgem warns that scammers pretend to be from Ofgem, and says it will never sell you energy, ask for your bank details or come to your home. The FCA says pension scams often start with attractive offers to transfer or release your pension.
Ofcom says scammers can fake the number that appears on your phone, which is called spoofing, and that they imitate UK numbers to look like a trusted person or organisation. Knowing details about you does not make a caller genuine.
This could still be a scam call
Criminals can make their number look like a genuine one (this is called spoofing). If someone calls from this number and asks for money, bank details, a code or passwords, hang up. Then call Financial Ombudsman Service back on a number you've found yourself, such as the one on their own website or on a letter or bill from them.
