What to do after a scam call

Edited by Richard BarkerChecked 13 October 2026

Act quickly, in this order. If you are in danger, call 999.

  1. Hang up

Do not call back any number the caller gave you.
  2. If it was about money, call your bank

Use the number on the back of your card, or call 159. Use a different phone, or wait 10 to 15 minutes first.
  3. If you paid or gave details, report it

England, Wales and Northern Ireland: Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040. Scotland: Police Scotland on 101.
  4. Send the number to 7726

Text the caller’s number to 7726. It is free and helps phone companies block it.
  5. Talk to someone you trust

Scams happen to careful people too. The Age UK Advice Line is free on 0800 678 1602, 8am to 7pm, every day of the year.
