How scams that copy technology and online services work

Age UK describes calls saying your device has a virus and that you need to download software to fix it. The software is spyware that can give scammers access to your online information. Never give remote access to someone who called you.

Ofcom says scammers can fake the number that appears on your phone, which is called spoofing, and that they imitate UK numbers to look like a trusted person or organisation. Knowing details about you does not make a caller genuine.

This could still be a scam call

Criminals can make their number look like a genuine one (this is called spoofing). If someone calls from this number and asks for money, bank details, a code or passwords, hang up. Then call Microsoft back on a number you've found yourself, such as the one on their own website or on a letter or bill from them.
