This could still be a scam call

Criminals can make their number look like a genuine one (this is called spoofing). If someone calls from this number and asks for money, bank details, a code or passwords, hang up. Then call Shelter back on a number you've found yourself, such as the one on their own website or on a letter or bill from them.

The label for each number is the source’s own wording.

This could still be a scam call

Scammers use phone spoofing, which falsifies caller ID so that a call can appear to come from a trusted government department when it does not. Banks and the police will never call you to verify your PIN, and will not ask you to withdraw money or buy or send items for an investigation. If you get a call like this, hang up. HMRC will never ask you to pay with gift or payment vouchers, and will never threaten arrest or leave a voicemail threatening legal action. If you are not sure a call was genuine, hang up and contact the organisation on a number you have found yourself, such as on GOV.UK or a letter from it. Do not use a number the caller gives you.

This is a number the organisation publishes for people to contact it. Government departments, police forces and courts often call out from other numbers or with the number withheld, and scammers can make a call show a real number, so a call from it is not proof of who called.

What the provider and number type mean

Numbers starting 0800 and 0808 are freephone numbers, used by businesses, helplines, charities and government services.

Ofcom allocates phone numbers to communications providers in blocks. The provider shown is the one Ofcom allocated this block to. It is not the person or business that called you, and the number may since have moved to a different network, because people can usually keep their number when they switch provider. Ofcom does not hold information about individual numbers.

Ofcom says calls to 0800 and 0808 numbers are free from all consumer landlines and mobiles. If you are calling from a business line, check with your provider.

Report or block 0808 800 4444
